Blocked Content: Offensive

I like Facebook. It was made for someone like me. I'm a sentimental freak. I like catching up with old friends and getting a whiff of their current life.

I also like to share things that I care about with folks on facebook.

One really cool website that provides outstanding perspective is: Global Rich List. I love this site because when we as American's talk about needing more money and stuff it is obscene - especially as we reflect on the world around us... often as close as our own city.

So - I wanted to let people know about this site, but it was repeatedly blocked. Apparently users thought it was offensive. So it got me to thinking...

Who would block a site to reveal where you stand economically in the world?

I think it comes down to what people think the motivation of the site is. As you look at the site it becomes obvious (at least if you land in the top % of incomes) that it is about thinking differently about money, being rich, spending, and the impact you can make in the world with the blessings you have.

So - why think this is offensive?

Could some people think it is deflating for people who aren't in the top percentages to see where they stand? So are some people thinking the site hurts people's feelings?

Could some people think it is a site to puff up rich folk - to make everyone feel better about themselves and be filled with self-pride?

Could some people think we should not be challenged to think about how incredibly blessed many of us are here in the USA? Block it because it makes me feel guilty?

What do you think? Have you tried it?

I don't think we need to feel entirely guilty because unfortunately the way our system is set up we have to have a good deal of money to live. For example an African can live on $1 a day because that is enough for them to have their land, their home, food (even if it isn't great food) and live their life (although that life has FAR less luxuries than ours). Our society is set up that unless we are really lucky to work at home we have to afford transportation which can mean a car or bike (which wouldn't work for the winter) or public transportation, to buy or rent a home/apartment in America (not to mention buy land for that home) is very expensive (even for taxes alone), to buy food etc. is far more expensive. So even to live a meager life in the States will cause us to be very high up on the global rich list. That is not to say most of us are not rich. We could definitely live on a LOT less. I just don't think guilt does good unless it is quickly transformed into action by giving more and living on less. We definitely are the richest people to have ever lived on this planet and we live in a rich society and even though in a way we are forced to have a good deal of money to even live here most of us make a good deal more than we need and that does make us rich. Last week at the church we went to the pastor was talking through all of this and paraphrased the scripture saying, "It is harder for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than for an American to get into Heaven." I think that there is a lot of truth to that because most of us are rich compared to many who live in our trailer parks, our government housing projects and the inner city. So we need to get out and give those that aren't as fortunate as us of our income, our energy, our time and our love. Guilt that's not transformed into action is not what God wants for us. He gives us the guilt to urge us to get in the game. Good post Steve. We miss you guys!
