I need to run away into a good book...

I would like to read a great fiction book over the holidays, but I need a recomendation.

I really enjoy supernatural/sci-fi stuff, but I am open to other ideas... no chickflick books. :)

ANY THOUGHTS? What is the best fiction book you've read in the last year?

Leave a comment with your answer... thanks for helping get me educated.

I have a couple of recommendations, although both are part of a series. First, "Eragon" (followed by "Eldest" and a third, yet-to-be-released book) by Christopher Paolini. Another option is to try the Tad Williams "Otherland" series, that begins with "Otherland: City of the Golden Shadow" (followed by "River of Blue Fire", "Mountain of Black Glass" and "Sea of Silver Light".

"Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini is the best fiction book I've read in a really long time. Wally Lamb is another one of my favorite fiction authors. My favorite book of his is "I know this much is true."

I highly recommend, "So you don't want to go to church anymore" by Jake Colsen. Excellent read, and it'll make you think.

Yeah, the Otherland series is a goodie - just goes on for ever - has a nice symbiosis of SCI FI (the VR context) and FANTASY - the mythical sets within the VR environment.

Another trilogy I loved with the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter Hamilton - The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemist, The Naked God - its a great yarn but along the way it asks some interesting questions about the nature of life and death and eternity. The great twist about this is that you get to see what it would be like if someone like Al Capone was set loose on the future!

If you want something twisted (and I know you do...) anything by Iain M Banks will grab you by the entrails and squeeze...

Ok. I can't help a whole lot in the Sci-Fi arena, but if you're in the mood for some top-notch Fantasy/Adventure reading... Look no further. ;)

Numero Uno:
Author: Terry Goodkind
Series of books: "Sword of Truth"
First book: "Wizard's First Rule"

Hands down the best I've read yet. I hope to see it made into a movie some day. It could be on a par with Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings, if made by the right people.

Honorable Mention #1:
Authors: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (Famed "Dragon Lance" authors)
Series of books: "The Death's Gate Cycle"
First book: "Dragon Wing"

A great series of books that look at what can happen to a world when two super powers can't get along.

Honorable Mention #2:
Author: David Eddings
Series of books: "The Belgariad"
First book: "Pawn of Prophecy"

Just plain fun. Great characters, and different enough in how things work in this world that it sets itself apart from others of this genera

Reading is fun! :D

Enjoy!

Looks like I've got a wish list ready to roll at Amazon.

Anyone hear anything about the new Michael Crighton book? Just curious.

The best book I've read this year is "High Fidelity". If you liked the movie, then you'll love the book. Its exactly the same except it takes place in London rather than Chicago.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Daunting (1000+ pages in trade paperback), but worth it. Funny and nerdy.
